A CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR AND THE ACTIVISTS WHO WORKED TO GET HIM APPOINTED
Please join us for a conversation with Alvin Bragg, New York’s first special prosecutor for police-related civilian deaths, and the organizers and victims’ families who campaigned to create his position. Moderated by Kai Wright of The Nation, we’ll get an inside look at the special prosecutor’s role and what work lies ahead.
This summer, families who have lost loved ones to police violence, working with members and partners of Communities United for Police Reform (including the Justice Committee, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Make the Road New York, VOCAL-NY,and ColorOfChange) achieved a paramount victory: Governor Cuomo signed an executive order to appoint an independent, special prosecutor to investigate killings by police, the first appointment of its kind in the country. Finally, families don’t have to rely on a system where the prosecution of police officers are in the hands of local district attorneys whose work requires them to collaborate with the police day to day.
This North Star Fund donor networking event will explore what the creation of this position means for communities most impacted by police violence.
