Police unions in the United States have built a dominant apparatus with a commanding grip on mainstream culture, media, politics, public policy, budgets, and legal systems. They deploy their power in ways that undermine democracy, entrench the criminal legal system, and inextricably embed themselves within other power centers across our society. Police unions’ pursuit of the expansion of the prison industrial complex further delays and denies racial, gender, and economic justice and erects barriers to the long term safety, health, and wellbeing of communities.
