The ACLU of New Jersey is the state’s leading organization dedicated to advancing and defending civil rights and civil liberties. The ACLU-NJ works on a daily basis to fight against police brutality, stop-and-frisk abuses, and other civil rights and civil liberties violations by law enforcement agencies. Most recently, the ACLU-NJ exposed Newark’s discriminatory and unconstitutional stop and frisk practices, and successfully petitioned the United States Justice Department to investigate and oversee the Newark Police Department. That petition resulted in the DOJ issuing a scathing report finding widespread civil rights and civil liberties violations by the Newark Police Department. A consent decree is now being drafted.
